Calendar Alert: Poet Henri Cole, Aug. 25

On Monday August 25, Henri Cole will read his poetry at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont, starting at 8 p.m., in the lecture hall on Route 15 (toward the eastern edge of the village). Cole, who directed the Academy of American Poets in the 1980s, is a Boston poet with a commitment to fusing the poetry of emotion with the poetry of style. I like this snippet from an interview he gave a few years ago:

Human beings are animals; we forget that, with our Cuisinarts and camera cell phones. But human beings also need love, which is the highest function of our species. It is in this connection that we either fail or succeed; it is our vocation on earth.

Kingdom Books will be on hand, with some of Cole's most recent volumes. Here's his list of published work:

* 2007: Blackbird and Wolf, Farrar, Straus & Giroux
* 2005: Vingt-Deux Poèmes, Paris: Yvon Lambert
* 2003: Middle Earth, Farrar, Straus & Giroux
* 1998: The Visible Man
* 1995: The Look of Things
* 1989: The Zoo Wheel of Knowledge
* 1986: The Marble Queen

Reminder: Always check with the Vermont Studio Center on the day of a reading there, as schedules do change: 802-635-2727.
