Sing You Home, the custody fight is not over a baby or child who has already been born, but over three fertilized embryos being kept in storage at the fertility clinic where Zoe Baxter and her ex-husband Max have spent much time, and thousands of dollars they could ill afford, in hopes of having a baby. The story is told by three viewpoint characters: Zoe and her ex-husband Max, who are the contesting parties for the embroyos, plus Vanessa, the school guidance counselor whose relationship with Zoe starts with friendship but develops into love and marriage.

t is undeniable that author Nancy Pickard has a flair for writing about murder mysteries that take place in small town settings. "The Scent of Rain & Lightning" is the second novel that I've read by Nancy Pickard, the first being "The Virgin of Small Plains" which went straight into the list of my favorite mystery novels of all time. Thus, when I picked up this book, I had a lot of expectations. And despite how pre-hyped (and over-hyped, I must add) the book had been in my mind, it came through on all my expectations.

The story is a little predictable, but the author's talent for painting pictures draws you into the story. You feel like you are there in Southern Mississippi and you can see, smell, hear, and taste everything the author describes. The characters are fleshed out perfectly and you become attached to each of them in different ways. Despite being slightly predictable, the author's talent is something to behold. I highly recommend taking the time to read this one!

I want the real thing! Or as close to it as possible. Grafton changed some of the coordinates for the fictionalized Santa Theresa for her alphabet series, but left enough of the town's character intact so that if you visited Santa Barbara you could experience a "look and feel" of where Kinsey Milhone exists. Besides, why should New York, Boston, Los Angeles or Chicago reap all the cross-marketing opportunities? The Trenton (NJ) historical society had their highest turn-out (3 buses had to be ordered) for a tour and lunch in 'the burg' of Stephanie Plum's Jersey corner. What a hoot to tour the public rooms of a funeral home, a bakery, and a bail bonds office! Mine, natch, would be somewhere (!) on the Jersey Shore!!

Each of the books brings us a thriller story with a twisted family backstory. There's plenty of suspense, enough violence to keep you on the edge of your seat, some romance between Kate and State Agent John Tomasetti, and some real insights into Amish culture. While this book seems to spend more time on Kate's emotions than the previous two, it's still an action-packed story.

This is a very nice review!
I want to read Vine in The Blood but we can't buy it yet in Belgium (Europe). I have read the first 3 books now (translated into Dutch), the 4th will be in the shop in a few days.
Somebody called this books Gage turners... so true!

That prize-winning recipe for maple-blueberry-topped cheesecake from CHOCOLATE COVERED MURDER stayed on my mind, so ... last week I made a cheesecake for my hubby and topped it with maple-blueberry sauce (half cup of blueberries, frozen or not, and half cup of pure maple syrup; bring to a boil, then simmer for 5-10 minutes). The extra sauce went onto waffles the next morning. Thinking of Leslie Meier's plot again: Why can't there be two competing chocolate shops here in MY town? (smile).
